China's
Youth 2015 - Working with Children of Migrant
Workers
World Education is a USA-based, private and
nonprofit organization. Through various educational,
economic and social development programs, World
Education has improved the lives of the poor
and disadvantaged and provided capacity building
trainings in more than 50 countries since 1953.
In China, our goal is to meet the specific needs
of vulnerable youth, especially children of
migrant workers and their families by providing
quality education and technical support, to
better equip them for safe migration, improve
their livelihoods, assist the growth and development
of their self-esteem and personality in order
to adapt to the rapidly changing society.
Goal
To assist vulnerable Chinese youth in adapting
to a rapidly changing situation in their areas
of origin and in new locations to which they
migrate by providing them with:
- Quality education through formal schooling
as well as out-of-school learning activities;
- Practical vocational skills they can use
to secure employment and improve their livelihoods;
- Peer support, mentoring, health and personal
safety information to better equip them for
safe migration and for life more generally.
Objectives
- To build the capacity of public and private
primary and middle schools working with vulnerable
youth through training and assistance with:
- Creating increased relevance of curriculum
to the every day needs of vulnerable youth
who are migrants or who at risk of migrating;
- Adapting innovative teaching methods to
accommodate a more holistic approach to
preparing vulnerable youth for life;
- Providing a more youth-friendly learning
environment that provides mentoring and
peer support to vulnerable youth;
- Increasing parental involvement in decision
making about their children's education;
and
- Advocating for access to and quality education
for vulnerable youth.
- To facilitate dialogue, networks, and linkages
between sending and receiving localities and
institutions, as well as between government
and private educational providers, in an effort
to better understand the special needs of
vulnerable youth and their families in order
to develop more holistic responses to their
specific education, employment and social
needs.
Target Groups
- Vulnerable youth between the age of 12 and
20, especially children of migrant workers.
- those migrating with their parents
to larger cities like Beijing and Shanghai
and
- those migrating to towns and cities
at the provincial level.
- Educational providers, both institutions
and individuals.
